Men and boys should wear suits and ties. Women should wear clothing that reflects the importance of the event and the dignity of the Rabbi and Torah. In other words, a synagogue just isn't the place for acres of decolletage. Rule of thumb: You're always safe with a modest dress or suit. It's a good idea to check if the synagogue you've been invited to allows women to wear pants; many Orthodox and some Conservative temples don't.If you're attending a celebration that's in another location, you can relax the rules a bit; one option many women chose is wearing a jacket over a dress, then removing the jacket at the party.
