So You Think You Can Hora?

For many, the highlight of the bar bat mitzvah celebration is the exuberant, entertaining round of Jewish dancing that literally kicks the party into high gear. The Hora is the best known of these dances and the easiest to learn. But savvy party throwers know several more to add to the mix as well as a slew of lively maneuvers that really enhance the fun. They also don't leave the success of this segment to chance.

Here's how you, too, can create a fantastically freylach (Yiddish for joyous) Hora session to your celebration.

  • Appoint a Hora Honcho -- someone who'll lead the crowd should the Hora dwindle unexpectedly early or your crowd finds itself uncertain what to do after circling the room a few times. Think of someone you're close to who's both coordinated and outgoing. Then have him or her watch this video before the big day.

  • Have the Hora Honcho (or any guest who feels like it) lead the hora through the room, as pictured above. The idea is have one person break the circle, leading the line as it snakes around the perimeter of the room or weaves around several distant tables. This always greatly enhances the hora as well as makes those who're still seated feel included.

    ENHANCING THE DANCING
Don't forget that once the Israeli dancing is over, there are lots of other ways to bust a move so the party's not a bust. These videos are great ways to refresh your memory or learn anew.
