Twin Themes of Travel and Charity

This Philadelphia bat mitzvah celebration featured a combination theme: travel and charity. Place cards were, cleverly enough, realistic replicas of US passports. Each guest's name was on the outside; inside, the name of a foreign country, which indicated their table assignment, and two logos, faux immigration seals, that read "Travel the World with Lindsey and Make a Difference."

The kids' tables featured impressive, three-foot-high centerpieces that nicely tied the twin themes of charity and travel and were cleverly constructed so seated guests could still see each other across the table. Each table represented a different cause: At the "Brazil" table, for instance, the centerpiece held a photo of the bat mitzvah holding a sign that read "Save the Rainforest!" At the Sudan table, her placard read "Save Darfur!"

At the adults' tables, the centerpieces were actually arrangements of stylish, square glass vases in varying sizes and shapes, each containing infants' and children's items being donated to a charity called Cradles to Crayons, which the bat mitzvah girl had worked with as her mitzvah project. What unified the disparate elements were beautifully tied luxurious ribbons in colors that matched the linens. This was a meaningful, smart, beautifully designed event that truly put the mitzvah in bat mitzvah!
