Whose Party Is It Anyway?

One of the challenges of B Mitzvah parties is figuring out how to accomodate the interests of two rather different demographics: tweenagers and adults, some of whom are elderly. With just a tiny shift in your plans you can throw a party that'll keep both bubbies and babes blissful:

  • Don't seat the older folks right near the band or the DJ's speakers. They'll be miserable trying to hear each other talk.

  • Ask your DJ or band to dedicate at least one dance set to songs the older generation likes. It can be swing, Sinatra, the Beatles, slow songs - whatever you like. This way, no one goes home feeling neglected. Of course, you don't want tweens twiddling their thumbs during this set either so make it short or choose music both groups can bop to. A good DJ should have a list of such songs.

  • It can be tedious for adults to watch the kids dominate the dance floor, playing game after game after game. So ask your DJ to include at least one game involving both sets of guests. There are many to choose from.
